You can identify birds in many ways but a few are the bill, the feathers, the feet, the way it flies, the behaviour,the noise and the size

Well what we have is a combination of books that have views of their flight patterns, views from all angles and how they look in flight. We also have Cds on bird calls and we have identified 99% of the birds we see this way!

I think it is an old war time thing when observors looked for aircraft. I think it means general impression of size and shape.
